Well, amigos, yesterday, I made the big leap and donated 10" of my hair to Locks of Love! Have you heard about it? Here's the 411...
WHAT IS LOCKS OF LOVE?
Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children 18 and younger with medical hair loss. These custom-fitted hair prosthetics are provided free of charge or on a sliding scale to children whose families meet the Locks of Love Board of Directors guidelines.
The organization, which began operation 1998, has helped over 2,000 children to date. Thousands of bundles of donated hair arrive as a result of the internet and word of mouth as well as publicity Locks of Love receives in newspapers, magazines and on television programs.
Donors provide the hair, volunteers open and sort the donations, and the manufacturer hand-assembles each piece, which requires approximately four to six months. Children comprise over 80 percent of the donors, making this a charity where children have the opportunity to help other children.
Locks of Love provides its recipients with a custom, vacuum-fitted hairpiece made entirely from donated human hair. The vacuum fit is designed for children who have experienced a total loss of scalp hair and does not require the use of tape or glue. Most of the applicants suffer from an auto-immune condition called alopecia areata, for which there is no known cause or cure. Others have suffered severe burns, or endured radiation treatment to the brain stem, in addition to many other dermatological conditions that result in permanent hair loss.
Donated hair is evaluated for its usefulness according to the following guidelines:
The donated hair must be at least 10 inches (preferably 12") in length
It must be bundled in a pony tail or braid
Hair must be free of bleach. Colored hair and permed is acceptable.
The hair must be clean and dry, placed in a plastic bag, and mailed in a padded envelope to: Locks of Love 2925 10th Avenue N., Suite 102 Lake Worth, FL 33461-3099
Monetary donations to Locks of Love are tax-deductible. Donated hair that is not suitable for use in children's hairpieces may be sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing.

Many salons are familiar with the program, so call and ask. Sage Spa & Salon in Whitefish offers free haircuts to people donating their hair and take the time to send your hair in for you and everything, so this one act of love involves lots of different people donating their time and energy! What a sweet blessing! I didn't realize quite how short 10" was going to leave my hair and I had to sit with the decision for a moment before I gave her the heads up to cut off my pigtails. Since completing my Juice Feast, I have felt called to donate my hair as an act of LOVE and as a completion of the cleansing circle I have been immersed in. Feels good! My hair hasn't been this short since I was 3! There is something about shorter hair that makes me feel peppy and hold my posture straighter and stronger!!
We had 2 of our dear friends over for dinner last night and everyone contributed something deliciously made with love. My hubby grilled moose roast (he's a hunter, if you haven't figured this out yet!), I made angelhair pasta out of zucchini using a saladacco (these things are awesome and are going to help my consume the masses of zukes pouring out of the greenhouse this summer!) and topped it with pesto (fresh, frozen from the garden), marinated mushrooms and nut cheese. The sweet amigos were conscious of my raw food diet (and enjoy it for themselves alot as well!) and brought a salad, homemade salad dressing and raw key lime pie...WOW! It was such a beautiful slow meal created with joy and shared with the best of company...aaah! The key lime pie recipe is so simple and delish, so here she is...
Raw Key Lime Pie
3/4 lb dates
1/2 lb almonds
3 avocado
4 limes, juiced
1/4 cup maple syrup (can sub raw honey or agave nectar)
Blend nuts and dates in food processor. Press into pie pan (optionally grease pie pan with olive oil). Blend avocado, limes, and sweetener of choice. Pour into pie pan. Freeze 3-4 hours. Remove one hour before serving. Garnish with kiwi, lime slice or sprinkle with bee pollen or shredded coconut. SAVOR in sweet company!
